What to do after an arrest

  1. Stop talking about the case. Not to police, not to the alleged victim, not on the phone from the jail, and not on social media. Jail calls are recorded and they are routinely used at trial.
  2. Write down what you remember. Names, times, what was said, who was present. Memory fades fast and details matter later.
  3. Do not consent to searches of your phone, vehicle, or home without talking to a lawyer first.
  4. Note every deadline. Arraignment dates, license deadlines after a DUI, and any no-contact conditions of release.
  5. Call a lawyer before the first court date, not the morning of it. The early window is when the most options exist.
